You get a sense of the Canton Fair’s size long before you reach the entrance. Driving past pavilions A, B, C and beyond, I began to wonder just how many kilometres I would cover by the end of the day. Once inside, it still felt enormous, but finding my way around was easier than I had expected.

Getting in was easier, too. I had arranged my badge in advance and arrived just before noon, expecting a queue. Two minutes later, I was through. For all the activity inside, the entrance was remarkably quiet when I arrived.

Looking beyond the first impression

I started in the motorcycle area, looking for accessories, riding clothing and protective gear. Helmets were much easier to find than apparel, but the visit brought an unexpected pleasure: discovering the range of Chinese motorcycles and some striking designs.

The bikes weren’t what I had come to source, so I enjoyed looking around before moving on. Elsewhere, laptop screen extensions, travel accessories, headphones and eyewear gadgets offered plenty to investigate.

Several products were interesting enough to deserve a closer look. What held my attention, though, was often a detail that could be improved: a choice of material, the quality of a finish, or a limitation that might matter to the person using it.

A laptop accessory with two additional screens was a good example. The exhibitor explained that it could deliver its best picture quality on a PC, but only a lower-resolution image on a Mac. For someone buying it to work across several screens, that is a useful distinction to understand before ordering.

The explanation I was given concerned the amount of data carried through a single USB-C cable. I asked whether using two cables could be an option, but the company said it had no plans to change the design.

With some of the wearables, I felt that better materials and more careful finishing could make an already interesting product more appealing. I haven’t discussed those possibilities with the exhibitors yet. Over the next few days, I plan to choose one or two for a more focused conversation.

A little preparation helps

English isn’t spoken at every stand, but translation apps have worked very well in the conversations I’ve had so far.

My Chinese-language business card also prompted a friendly exchange. One exhibitor complimented it and assumed I had a local company. I explained that I simply thought it was courteous to make the effort when visiting China. It was a small moment, but a memorable one.

The possibilities of making something

Of everything I saw, the manufacturing equipment captured my imagination most. Alongside the finished products were machines for making them, including a stand offering a complete brewery setup.

Manufacturing equipment displayed on a two-level exhibition stand The equipment on display opened up a different set of possibilities.

At a time when so much attention is on AI, it was refreshing to spend time looking at the practical possibilities of manufacturing: equipment you could buy, put to work and use to make something tangible. I’m not about to open a factory, but that part of the fair stayed with me.

There is more here than anyone could properly assess in a single visit. I left excited by the choice, slightly overwhelmed and still deciding which opportunities to pursue. I haven’t found a product I would confidently call the next big thing, but I have found several reasons to return.

For the next visit, I’ll start with a specific product and compare the exhibitors offering it, rather than explore a whole pavilion and see where it takes me. That should leave more time to examine the details and ask better questions.

Today was about getting my bearings. Tomorrow, Polina joins me, and we’ll begin taking a closer look together.
